I’ve lived in New Orleans for a little over 7 years now, and have been fortunate (knocks on wood) to avoid a hurricane so far. There have been plenty of misses, though, and I’ve gotten accustomed to the drill:
fill up the gas tank
get some cash out of the ATM
secure your home
park your car in a high spot
go straight to Rouses and buy out all the water, toilet paper, milk, and bread in sight
But how about your health insurance needs? Well, I’ve got some good news for you. From our friends at Blue Cross…..
if you look at the back of your medical ID card, you can call the pharmacy # listed on there to alleviate any typical headaches associated with filling your scripts (waiting periods, quantity limits, etc)
telehealth visits — remember there are available thru BlueCare, often at a free or reduced charge
expanded network — if you’re on an Ochsner, LCMC, or other select network plan, you’ve got access to the full statewide PPO options for a limited time
durable medical equipment that is damaged because of the hurricane will be replaced. call the # on your ID card to talk to a customer care representative
waiving prior authorization for things like mental health services
So do yourself a favor and add a few items to your typical hurricane prep list. Thanks to Blue Cross, many of the pain points have been addressed to give consumers better and easier access to care during this challenging time. Good luck out there this week, and stay safe, Louisiana!!
